Grass Mountain Pottery
As a teenager, Ren was amazed with the concept of transforming ordinary clay into beautiful pottery artworks. Thanks to one of his best friends whose high school had offered pottery classes!
It was not until 2003 that he and pottery truly crossed each other’s path. Ren met the Korean pottery master, Clay Kim, who immigrated to Vancouver not long ago at the time. Ren was inspired by Master Kim’s skills and artwork. From then on, he started his learning process of pottery making under Master Kim’s guidance.
Originally trained as an engineer and worked in IT field, Ren is a hands-on individual who enjoys building things and exploring new ideas. He views pottery as both art and engineering process. At first, it was merely a hobby to provide relaxation from his day job. He later realizes that his passion lies in forming the shape of a pot on a pottery wheel and, step by step, turning it into a finished product. As he progresses in his study with clay, he learns about carving on clay pots, creating decorative inlay patterns, sculpting clay figures, mixing and applying glaze, operating the pottery kilns, and even researching his own glaze formulas. By 2010, he setup his own pottery studio in Coquitlam, BC.
Ren continues to improve his skills on pottery making and to pursue his research on glaze formulas.
