Process of Making Pottery

Throwing and Trimming:

Centering the clay is the most important step in wheel throwing.  At one time, 10 kg of clay is centered and thrown on the pottery wheel.  The benefit is to be able to continuously make the pots until all the clay is used up.  In most cases, trimming is required to create the proper footing and thickness of the pot.

Carving:

Carving is not essential in pottery making but is the key feature in Ren’s artwork which is unique and elegant.  Steady hands are required in order to produce smooth lines and curves of the patterns.  There are different techniques of carving such as inlay, double inlay, sgraffito, relief and open work.

Bisque and Glaze Firings:

Once the pots have been air-dried, they are then placed in the kiln for bisque firing which can last 8 to 10 hours and its internal temperature can reach up to 980°C.  Last steps of the process are to apply glaze and to glaze-fire the pots.  To produce the color hue of Ren’s artwork, reduction firing is required.
